During our last yoga teacher training session, one of our trainees got our class started with an amazing centering sequence that included this sentence:
“This is your mat.”
It resonated with everyone. After class, it was THE topic of conversation. It stuck with everyone because of the innate truth in it.
This is your mat.
This is your practice.
This is your body.
This is your life.
Yoga is simply a tool. It’s a tool that we can use to help us be better at our own life. The tool is ours to use as we wish; to unwind, to build strength, to lengthen, to release, to breathe, to find clarity in our thoughts, to find sound in our own voice.
As yoga teachers, we can communicate this idea to our students, too. For me, it’s one of the most important concepts to communicate. One, because, hey how many people can really put their leg behind their head?! And two, because it’s key for us all to remember that the real goal of practice is better living outside of class.
It’s an amazing tool, what do you choose to do with it? It’s your mat.
